Polarization-independent optical isolator in a Sagnac-type configuration

چکیده
We propose a polarization-independent optical isolator that does not use walk-off between the two orthogonal polarizations. The design is based on Faraday rotators in combination with half-wave plates closed, Sagnac-interferometer-like, configuration. An experimental prototype tested successfully under variation of input light polarization state isolation level 43 dB and 50 for all polarizations (linear, circular, or elliptical).

A novel 2 x 2 polarization-independent optical switch with holographic optical elements is proposed. The switch consists of an electro-optic half-wave plate sandwiched between two pairs of holographic polarization beam splitters. Normally incident input and output couplings of this compact and lightweight device provide better flexibility and easier alignment for system applications.
